Rumours are rife that the 40th governor of California, Gavin Newsom may run for the upcoming presidential elections in 2024. This may happen if incumbent Joe Biden chooses not to seek re-election. Quinnipiac University conducted a poll revealing statistics that probably would disappoint Newsom. As per the poll results, 70% of voters in California do not want their governor to run for the Presidential elections. Interesting to note here is that the given 70% is inclusive of the majority of Democrats. Only 22% of California voters want Newsom to contest the journey for the White House. If only Democratic voters are concerned, 54% are against Newsom’s ticket to contest.
Gavin Newsom, aged 55 years first came to the limelight when he while working as a Mayor of San Francisco in 2004 issued same-sex marriage licenses. Such an act was in contravention of state law. He is a wine entrepreneur and won California’s governor elections in 2018. California is also Newsom’s home state. He garnered praises for his handling of the Covid-19 pandemic but faced a blot when a call for his recall was made because of his flouting covid rules. Nonetheless, he came out victorious by defeating the recall led by Republicans and entered the second term as California’s governor in November 2022.
WHAT GAVIN NEWSOM SAYS?
Newsom has completely refuted the speculations of him contesting presidential elections. He stated that even if Joe Biden chooses not to seek re-election, he will not be entering the national arena. Further, he asserts that he has made this clear to everyone in the White House, be it the First Lady or the Chief of Staff. He exclaims his enthusiasm for supporting Joe Biden if he again contests the Presidential election. Newsom expresses hope that Joe Biden will make an announcement of his re-election in early 2024 and is confident of Biden beating Donald Trump as he has successfully done so previously.
FOR BIDEN TOO, IT IS NOT A PLAIN SAILING
As per the latest Emerson College Poll, Joe Biden’s approval rating is around 39%. It is the prime reason for Democrats to cast a new face for the upcoming national elections. A Quinnipiac University poll says that about 68% of Americans are unwilling to see Joe Biden as presidential nominee next time. On the same footing, the Siena College Poll indicates that the majority of Democratic voters wish for another presidential candidate. The good news as per Emerson College poll prediction is that Biden would win if he contests against Donald Trump and as per CNBC Biden is preferred by Democrats over Vice President Kamala Harris.
It would be interesting to see the race for the White House, which has already begun. Gavin Newsom indulged in the aggressive launching of advertisements in Republican-ruled states like Texas and Florida. He also criticised his political party for not properly handling the area of messaging. Newsom has the support of a significant number of Democratic donors and thus he is high on money, which can enable him to aggressively conduct campaigns. Let us see what unfolds in the United States of America’s political arena.
