INTRODUCTION
Nikhil Chauhan, a nineteen-year-old student of Delhi University was allegedly stabbed to death outside the South Campus of Aryabhatta College. Though the father of the victim claims that his son was a student at Aryabhatta College, according to information from the local police, the deceased student was a first-year student at the School of Open Learning (SOL) pursuing an undergraduate degree as a Bachelor of Arts.
SUSPECTS
The Police have apprehended two people so far in connection with the death of the nineteen-year-old male, both of whom have been identified as young adolescents.
According to Mr. Manoj C, the Deputy Commissioner of Police of southwest Delhi, the suspects apprehended so far have been identified as Rahul, another student pursuing an undergraduate degree as a Bachelor of Arts and Rahul’s friend Haroon, who is a school dropout.
Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner added that two more suspects have been identified as well in the case of Nikhil Chauhan, who was stabbed to death by three or possibly more men.
MURDER AND MOTIVE
Apparently, young Nikhil Chauhan was in a relationship with a girl which led to conflicts between Nikhil and another who was actively pursuing her and on one occasion acted inappropriately towards her. Following such events, there was a breakout of a serious fight between the two, almost a week before Nikhil’s murder.
The suspect, who bore a grudge against Nikhil over the matter, returned the following Sunday and ambushed him along with two of his abettors who aided and assisted him in assaulting Nikhil Chauhan outside the college gate at 12:15 p.m.
As a result of the series of events that unfolded during this encounter, one of them unveiled a knife and stabbed Nikhil in the chest with it. Soon after, the suspects fled from the scene of the crime, leaving Nikhil bleeding in the middle of the road.
Though he was immediately rushed to the Charak Palika Hospital by onlookers who witnessed him falling down on the road, bleeding, he was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital due to excessive bleeding from a direct wound to the heart. It appears that the knife that had been brandished into his chest, pierced right into his heart. A First Information Report was registered immediately and the body of the student was preserved in order to conduct an autopsy for the purpose of the case.
INVESTIGATION EFFORTS
The girl who is presumed to be at the center of the rivalry that cost Nikhil his life has supposedly been questioned by the cops along with family and friends who knew Nikhil as well as college authorities for potential leads in the case that may help prosecute the accused of their crime.
Nikhil Chauhan’s phone records are also being examined as a part of the investigation in order to figure out if the suspects in the matter made any threatening phone calls to Nikhil prior to the commission of the crime.
An eyewitness to the scene recalls being at a construction site on the day of the murder when they suddenly heard a voice screaming. It was then that the witness learned that some people had apparently stabbed a boy and as the witness recalls Nikhil apparently attempted to run a few meters after sustaining injuries from the incident while clutching his chest, where he had been stabbed and crying for help before he collapsed on the road.
Subsequently, it was three of Nikhil’s friends who had picked him up off the road and acted on their feet, making attempts to get him immediate medical attention by taking him to a hospital on a scooter. It was after this, that the police arrived at the scene of the crime.
Police have made efforts towards finding the accused by way of searching their residences and known places that they frequented. However, it appears that the accused are on the run based on the fact that they have been caught on CCTV footage, fleeing on a motorbike and two scooters. Mr. Sanjay Chauhan, Nikhil’s father, along with the rest of the bereaved family demand strict action be taken against the accused.
