Mantri Jan Suraksha Schemes on their eighth anniversary.
RESPONSE BY MINISTRY OF FINANCE
In response to a tweet by the Ministry of Finance, he acknowledged that the schemes launched 8 years
ago have been a significant source of support for millions of Indians, providing them with an efficient
social security cover.
PRADHAN MANTRI JAN SURAKSHA SCHEMES
Pradhan Mantri Jan Suraksha Schemes (PMJSS) are a group of social security schemes launched by
the Government of India in 2015 to provide affordable and accessible insurance coverage to the
economically weaker sections of society.
THE THREE SCHEMES THAT COME UNDER PMJSS ARE:
Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY): Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima
Yojana (PMJJBY) is a government-backed life insurance scheme launched in 2015 to provide
affordable and easily accessible life insurance coverage to the Indian population. The scheme
is available to anyone between the age of 18 and 50 years and offers a sum assured of Rs.
Two lakhs to the nominee of the policyholder in the event of their death due to any reason.
PMJJBY is a yearly renewable term insurance plan that is offered through public sector
general insurance companies and some private insurance companies.
The premium for the
scheme is kept low at Rs. 330 per year, which makes it affordable for people from all walks of
life. The premium is directly debited from the policyholder’s bank account through the auto-
debit facility. The enrolment for PMJJBY is done on an annual basis, and interested
individuals can enroll in the scheme through any of the participating banks. The enrolment
process is straightforward, and no medical examination is required for enrolment. The
scheme has been widely accepted and has provided insurance coverage to millions of people
across the country.
PMJJBY has been especially beneficial for individuals who do not have

Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY): Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana
(PMSBY) is a government-sponsored personal accident insurance scheme launched in 2015 to provide financial security and support to individuals and their families in case of any accidental death or disability. The scheme offers a sum assured of Rs. Two lakhs in case of the policyholder’s accidental death or permanent disability, and a sum of Rs. One lakh in case of partial disability.
PMSBY is available to all individuals between the ages of 18 and 70 years and is renewable on an annual basis. The premium for the scheme is minimal at Rs. Twelve per annum and is auto debited from the policyholder’s bank account. The enrolment process is straightforward and can be done through any of the participating banks. The scheme covers a wide range of accidental deaths and disabilities, including those resulting from road accidents, drowning, fire, and natural calamities. It also provides coverage for terrorism- related incidents. PMSBY has been particularly helpful for individuals who are the sole
breadwinners of their families or do not have any form of accidental insurance coverage.
The scheme has been successful in increasing awareness about the need for personal accident

Atal Pension Yojana (APY): Atal Pension Yojana (APY) is a government-backed pension
scheme launched in 2015 to provide social security and financial stability to the unorganised
sector workforce in India. The scheme is available to all Indian citizens between the ages of
18 and 40 years and provides them with a guaranteed monthly pension of Rs. One thousand to
Rs. Five thousand per month, depending on their contribution amount and age at the time of
enrolment.
APY is a contributory pension scheme, where the contributions are made by the
subscriber and matched by the government in the form of a co-contribution. The contribution
amount is fixed based on the subscriber’s age at the time of enrolment and the desired
pension amount. The contributions are made monthly and are auto debited from the
subscriber’s bank account. The scheme also provides an option for the subscriber to choose a
nominee who will receive the accumulated pension corpus in case of the subscriber’s death
before the age of 60 years.
APY has been successful in providing financial security to
millions of individuals in the unorganised sector who do not have access to any formal
pension schemes. The scheme has also been instrumental in promoting a culture of savings
among the lower-income group and encouraging them to plan for their retirement. In
